When
I was a youngster, before I grew up,
It was dogs I adored, just give me a pup!
The bigger, the better, yes, dogs were my joy...
The wagging, the slobbering, a good bone, oh boy.
But as I grew older, and wiser for sure,
I discovered the feline's mysterious allure.
My first kitten, that Benny, showed me the way
To a life made richer by cats everyday.
Between the dogs and cats, the big difference I found
Is that a cat needs respect, much more than a hound.
Then came Sushi the black cat, and Sadie the gray,
Teaching love must be earned, not given away.
For kittens and cats, I developed my love,
For toms, and for strays, for all the above.
It was then I decided to do something more,
to help cats at risk, I opened my door.
A nonprofit outfit, "Stray Pets in Need",
Offered the chance to give back all the love I received.
I took in new "moms" and their little ones,
too,
'til they were ready for homes with kind people like
you.
Their foster mother I became, and it was a ball...
And when I was done, I'd care for 13 in all!
The tail flick, the ear twitch, the nap in the sun...
Curled up in my lap, over dogs, cats had won
My undying devotion, yes, these creatures are dear
And upon close reflection, my future was clear.
I loved cats, the darlings, and everything feline...
